As parents, you are always teaching your children new things. Whether they are learning about the way the world works or simply what they’re interested in, kids often learn by watching their parents. Exposing your kids to your hobbies and passions can help them develop their own. For golfers, bringing your kids to the course is a good way for them to get some exercise and fresh air while learning something new.

If you start playing golf around your child, you may notice them begin to mimic your golf swing; this may indicate they have an interest in playing golf. You may be wondering how old they should be, while there’s no perfect age to take up the sport, there are a few things to consider before you start teaching your kid to play golf.

Things to consider

One of the most important things to do when teaching your kids golf is to make sure they’re having fun. Golf does take focus and discipline, but it’s crucial to have a good balance between responsibility and recreation. While fun is important, ensure your child has the maturity to handle the more challenging parts of golf if they want to hone their skills.

There are also some physical factors to consider when determining if a child is ready to play golf. The sport requires walking and a certain amount of dexterity, so your toddler probably is not ready to pick up a club. They also need to be mentally capable of understanding golf. The rules and strategy of the sport may be more difficult to grasp for younger children. If your child meets these criteria, it might be worth getting them into golf lessons for kids. More formalized instruction can be great for kids ages six and up, but that doesn’t mean you little one can’t get into the game as well. Before age six even just teaching children about the different clubs and letting them have fun on the putting green and spark a lifelong passion for golf.

Your child isn’t going to become a success overnight. Unless you’re raising a prodigy like Tiger Woods, it’s going to take time and commitment to improve their skills. If you have dreams of them at the PGA tour, start teaching them golf sooner rather than later.
