As the pandemic continues out of the summer months and into the fall, many of us are looking for excuses to get out for some socially distanced enrichment. Golf has become increasingly popular for this very reason. Though seasoned golfers certainly don’t need reasons to play golf, the rest of the population didn’t necessarily see the benefits of the game before social distancing became so important.

In addition to the fresh air, open space, and ability to play socially or alone, playing 18 holes of golf once in a while can actually have scientific benefits. Even though it may not be the first sport that comes to mind when beginning your fitness journey, golf can absolutely help you gain muscle and lose weight. Golf can also help build certain physical and mental skills. So, the next time you have a weekend free or need a weekday work activity, consider giving golf a try.

Thank you, scientists!

1) More swings on the course = better balance all the time

Research has demonstrated that playing golf actually increases muscle stability and balance, finding that golfers tend to have better dynamic and static balance than non-golfers of the same age.

2) Drive your way to more flexibility

A proper golf swing requires flexibility, and stretching beforehand is crucial for reducing risk of injury.

3) Stress kills. Golf saves

We are all under a lot of stress right now, between our individual obligations and the larger social unrest in the country. Studies have shown that spending time in nature and engaging in moderate exercise has a positive effect on stress levels. Golf has been included among the types of physical activity shown to reduce stress and anxiety.

4) Laughter is the best medicine

Golf can be a social experience as well as a physical one. The sport is a great opportunity to make new friends or spend time with old ones. Many people also use golf as a networking opportunity. As a result, the same mental benefits of socializing can be achieved through a round of golf.

Over the past 18 months the course has been in better shape than I have ever seen it.
